Satellite HDTV Round and Round and Too Late

The revolution has come and gone… HDTV is here, technologically at least.  Though I have to say, I’m pretty underwhelmed by it so far.  I mean the hype is there….every time you look at televisions in Currys or something, the salesman will point you to the large HDTV ready tick mark.  Pages and pages of AV forums are devoted to arguing over which HDTV is the best and do we go 720 or 1028 or 1080i….and is it upscaled?  Fuck me!  It got complex fast.  Gone are the days when you just go “gimme a TV mate, I wanna get home and watch the footie this evening”.

So anyway, you manage to negotiate all that crap and get yourself a cool panny or sony or something and now, all you can do is watch DVDs….as long as you have an HD compatible DVD player.  Oh Shit!  Back to that upscaling crap again.  No, wait, Blu-ray that’s the winner there.  C’mon.  Give me a break.  I don’t give a fuck.  Like I said, I just want to go home and watch my footie in peace.  I don’t want to have to get a degree before I can go and buy an entertainment system.

So, what are our options?  True HD is only really going to happen through satellite I rekon.  So then, Sky?  Yep that’s one option.  Freesat is another.

I’ve never had much luck with Sky.  I mean the service has always been shitty.  The tempt you in with all their great offers and integrated internet-telephone-tv packages and then you’re fucked.  Special offers only available to new customers that sort of thing.  And it pisses me off too, because I get shitty terrestrial reception.  Not even freeview helps me.  Not a squat.  That’s just crap – I thought you pay your tv licence to pay for the infrastructure so i can get tv.  Anyway so I phoned up aunty and spoke to someone there – no help.  I’ve looked through forums and had no joy.  Had an aerial installer round and he couldn’t get me a decent signal.  So I’m stuck having to fork out more money on a satellite service.  So, I’ve gone for freesat, cause I only needed a box – still had the old sky dish that they never removed when I cancelled my subs.

What I think is a real shame is that the beeb hasn’t really promoted their freesat service.  Seems to me to be a good way to go.  Since it is a bbc thing, they will be free of bandwidth restrictions so I hope that all the channels will eventually go hd.  Plus the freesat stuff was cheaper – sky wanted 300quid for their box….and 10 quid a month subs.  Freesat only cost me 140 for the box.

Oh well.  Check out or freesat blog
